Stigmas, Stereotypes, and Social Identity Threat

What are they?

Stigmas

Stigmas are they negative beliefs about and disapproval of individuals based on perceived characteristics that deviate them from other members of society (Libretexts, 2021).

Stigmas can be incredibly harmful to the people that are stigmatized as they often result in severe mistreatment and exclusion. Stigma related thoughts may not be on the conscious mind, though they can still weigh heavily on judgements and behavior (Smart& Wegner 2000).

Stereotypes

A stereotype is a set of beliefs about a person's characteristics and attributes based on their group membership. These are often exaggerated and more negative than positive (APA 2020).

There are many negative stereotypes associated with Mexican Immigrants in the United States.

Social Identity Threat

"Social identity threat is the situationally triggered concern that one is at risk of being stigmatized and provides a conceptual model of its antecedents and consequences. Social identity threat stems from mere awareness of the cultural representations that associate a self-relevant social identity with undesirable characteristics" (Major& Schmader 2017)

Mexican Immigrants experience social identity threat as a result of being negatively stigmatized and the belief that these immigrants identity does not fit with the ideal American identity.
