Abuse in Detention Centers: Quote

Mistreatment of Immigrants in Detention Centers

Immigrants in these detention facilities, that have little to no oversight by the government, are denied access to healthcare, given no respect after being ripped away from their families and taken many miles away, only being allowed visits under certain circumstances and if the family has their own transportation, face sexual and physical abuse, and the lack of contact with the outside world, causing both psychological and physical harm (Velez 2014).

The anti-immigrant agenda in these facilities allows for the dehumanization of these immigrants, and because of this they receive very little care, even when it's very necessary, and are abused and mistreated.

Women are separated from their families and children, denied access to reproductive healthcare, even when pregnant, and create new trauma because of this lack of healthcare women need (Ellmann 2019).

  • This further increases ethnocentric exclusion by locking them up and ensuring they aren’t in American society. This dehumanizes them and takes any power away from them simply for trying to gain access to a better life, and potentially improve the economy in many areas of the United States.

  • This also increases white superiority and domination over minority groups as there is no need to fear racial progress when they are locked up and humiliated by physical and verbal abuse.

  • People may think that these immigrants deserve this because of the negative stigmas and stereotypes they associated with Mexican immigrants (e.g., they have bad intentions coming to America and bringing drugs)
